Title : Federalism and Ethnicity in Iran*
Abstract:
Traditionally, the separatist's movements in Iran were supported by the former USSR. Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1991, former USSR republics have gained independence, and along with the rise of newly created states, the separatists groups in Iran have changed their tactics. The demise of Baathist regime in Iraq, along with the rising power of Persian Gulf Arab sheikdoms, the anti-Iranian campaign by Israel and the U.S., have given a new source of support for Iranian secessionist movements in Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Khuzestan, and Baluchistan. In this talk, Federalism and Ethnicity in Iran, I will examine the new facade for separatist movements in Iran, that is a twisted understanding of federalism."
